Venus is traveling backward through the underbelly of our emotional world (0 - 8° Scorpio) into the part of our natal chart that remembers balance, fairness, and relational coherence (29 - 22° Libra). Integrating what we receive from exploring these two modes of relating will uplevel the quality of our relationships and how we engage others.
Venus Retrogrades last 40 days.
In world traditions, 40 is the number associated with rituals that include testing, purification, waiting, and transformation that precedes a major transition or new beginning. Taking a cue from this, we can select something we will abstain from for the Retrograde period. It may be a certain type of food, or perhaps we will can take a fast from social media. We may take a fast from a particular relationship or some habit that drains us. We fast so that we can reclaim a calmness and presence that will allow us to be present, listen and hear what wants to be revealed.
From conception to birth, humans spend on average 40 weeks in utero. During the 40 days of a Venus Retrograde we conceive and then gestate a truth or concept that we look to birth into our life at the culmination for the Retrograde. To support this process, we are to carve out time to be with ourselves and reduce activities that distract us from an intimate engagement with the deep self.

We do not learn
from experience…
we learn from reflecting
on experience.

Venus Retrograde in Scorpio illuminates how we are wired for intimacy, and where our wires have gotten crossed or severed. If we take the time to listen, there will be revelations around stories we have told ourselves and habits we inherited. Meaningful insights may reveal our real motives, desires, fears, and attachments that have guided our interactions and ways of relating.
Mercury is also in Scorpio helping our mind focus and drill down towards what lies at the root of our behaviors and actions. Our mind and heart sync up on October 7 when Mercury conjuncts Venus. Venus is having us encounter our emotional and relational motives, desires, fears, attachment patterns. Mercury readying to turn Retrograde on October 24, turns our thoughts to articulating, remembering, and interpreting the sensations and emotional connections Venus has guided us towards. The conjunction ties the two together. Feeling and understanding feed one upon the other. After Mercury turns Retrograde on October 24, deep truths we have kept from ourselves will continue to surface around what drives us and hooks us. We will also become intimately engaged with what we most long for and what we will give our lives to protect.
Venus retrograde asks, “What is the truth of how I relate?”
Mercury retrograde asks, “What is the truth of how I perceive, interpret, and communicate within those relationships?”
Together, they address the emotional and narrative truth around what we feel and what we tell ourself about what we feel. The Mercury retrograde in Scorpio adds precision and psychological coherence to the Venus retrograde. They make emotional revelations intelligible. They help us see the pattern, not just the feeling.
Scorpio retrogrades don’t favor quick disclosures or impulsive conversations. They favor sitting with the truth until it’s clean enough to speak. Mercury adds the opportunity to revise our language so we can better name needs, articulate boundaries, and communicate our desire. When Venus moves back into Libra, then we gain an ability to negotiate from clarity and not old scripts.
October 15, Pluto, ruler of Scorpio and planet of transformation, turns direct. This reinforces and supports the work of the retrogrades. It helps to focus us so that the retrograde period is purposeful, meaningful, and actionable. We are compelled to validate what we are perceiving and take a course of action to no longer live out of an old pattern now that we see it for what it is.
As Venus Retrograde backs into Libra October 25, the opportunity shifts. We enter a time when refine what we have unearthed within to shape relational choices that feel generative and not reactive. We envision ways to re‑balance agreements, re‑negotiate dynamics, and re‑establish fairness.
The opportunity of Venus Retrograde is a recalibration of intimacy. We get to understand what closeness means for us now in what we want to give and what we want to receive. We will see where we are ready to stop performing. We have the opportunity to integrate emotional truth with the ways we interact and connect with others.

it is an intimate date

Time is what we spend our lives with.
If we are not careful
we find others spending it for us...
It is necessary now and then for [one]
to go away by [themselves] and experience loneliness;
to sit on a rock in the forest and to ask,
'Who am I, and where have I been,
and where am I going?'...
If one is not careful,
one allows diversions
to take up one's time—
the stuff of life.
Carl Sandburg
