To understand whales

is to understand the depths

of our own souls.

The Full Moon on September 26, 2026, at 3° Aries

invites us to open to what is stirring deep within, letting it gift us with a new awareness about our place and role in the world, along with the courage to not hold back from bringing ourselves fully to our life and relationships.

Full Moons mark the peak of the lunar cycle. There is a momentum and pressure that comes to a head and is experienced as crisis, clarity or breakthrough which can lead to resolution. The two weeks following a Full Moon, we complete the month's journey and distilling the wisdom of the recent lunar cycle, so we are ready for the invitation that is presented with the next New Moon.

The house where 3° Aries resides in our natal chart indicates the area of life where we are called to act with courage in response to new levels of awareness around our own nature of what we truly want to bring forth into our relationships and collaborations.

It is not just the size of the whale

that inspires awe, but

the life it carries within it,

and the stories it tells in its song.

The Aries Full Moon is aligned with the fixed star Difda,

known at The Tail of the Whale.

Contemplating Difda, the brightest star in the constellation of Cetus, the Full Moon dynamics came into focus.

2026, in many ways, is defined by Aries energy. The Aries Full Moon amplifies the year's themes and encourages us to move from courage to assert and step into the unknown. It invites us to find that deep trust in ourselves and ability to act upon our instincts without need of external validation or justification.

Neptune conjoined the Aries Moon introduces an element of magic and mystery. Aries is an energy of dynamic assertion and Neptune is diffusive, receptive and imaginative. The Aries warrior becomes a mystic. This invites the warrior to go on a pilgrimage or quest to recover or discover something that will benefit the greater community.

What has continually fascinated me in all my years of interacting with astrology, is how we readily identify Aries characteristics from the constellation of the headstrong Ram while ignoring the characteristics associated with constellations also located in the same area of the sky. Below and somewhat surrounding the Ram, there is a constellation that dominates the Aries section of the sky, which is Cetus, the Whale.

When we are in a position to see The Tail of a Whale rising above the surface of a salty sea, we immediately recognize that we are witnessing just the tip of a mighty creature. We are being given a glimpse of something that lives within the depths, often unseen, and we sense its beauty and majesty. Scientists purport that whales have existed in our oceans for 40 million years and that they have an intelligence and a memory and a way to communicate that can be heard around the world. When the tail or fin or blowhole surfaces, we often feel gifted or sense that we are receiving a special message.

Cetus the Celestial Whale is associated with myths that reflect how the sea monster, the whale embodies a primal, elemental aspect of the human condition. The whale has been associated with a Great Mother energy and the primordial womb where all life once gestated. To touch on Whale medicine is to touch on deep mystery and the genesis of creativity, inspiration and life on earth.

People with a strong Aries imprint are said to know themselves in that they exude confidence and bravery. They trust their instincts and don’t look for external validation or seek stability and security, so they feel safe in the world. They fly on the seat of their pants, seem to thrive on taking risks, and are ready to lead the charge, bushwhack a new path, or pioneer something undiscovered.

I have thought that what gives the Aries spirit a steadfast confidence can only in part be attributed to the Ram's nature, but more so from the Whale. Aries people are tapped in and draw from the Piscean waters (the sign preceding Aries); it is as if the umbilical cord to the great cosmic source of life had never been severed for these people. They have a direct link to the Source that they trust implicitly. They can feel the movements arising from their depths. They do not question them, nor do they reflect on them. They often do not stop long enough to define them. But they do trust and act on them.

With the Aries Full Moon, we are to recognize the Tail of the Whale that has surfaced in our life. We are being given insights or urges or awarenesses about who we are and what we want that help to round something out, flesh out more of what our life is about. We are to listen and act. It is not about pondering, but about trusting. And its not just for ourselves, but to bring into relationships with others.

The Aries Moon needs to resolve the dynamic tension with the Sun and Mercury in Libra, which looks calls us into relationship. In the Aries directive to honor ourselves, we find resolution of the Full Moon tension by standing up for ourselves as we engage others and being strong enough to listen and receive what they assert without blocking or deflecting.

We are to speak what matters for us and not just make nice. We are to seek resolution without quieting our viewpoint. We are to collaborate not by taking a backseat but by trusting the creative force that is moving through us. If we can come from strength, from a unwavering inner validation of who we are and what we are about, then we will be less prone to manipulate, defend, attack, dominate, shut down or engage in other behaviors that cheapen what we want to create with others.

Personal Reflection

I grew up in Southern California near Newport Beach. Where I live now in the North Carolina mountains, I feel the rhythm of the year and nature through engaging the trees and the forests as they shift from one season to the next.

California doesn’t have seasons like other regions where one can watch the leaves turn colors, the trees become bare or see the landscape blanketed with snow or gardens burst into bloom at spring. In my childhood, living in the state of perpetual sunshine, I marked seasons in a different way. Nature and the of seasons were felt through my connection with and proximity to the ocean.

My childhood was shaped by the Pacific Ocean and its rhythms. My brothers were surfers and so we had a daily awareness of the size of the swells and surf and the strength of the wind on the water. My father had a 24-foot fishing boat and so we knew when the water was calmest or what fish were in season.

We felt the movement of the waters and whether the tide or surf was high. Living in a house with surfers and weekend fisherman, we had a daily awareness of whether the surf was high or waves were rough. We knew when the winds were up, when the morning fog had moved out to sea, and what times of day the tide was high.

We had a sense of what moved deep within the waters, Bass could be found year-round, but summer months were best for fishing Halibut or Mahi Mahi. Lobster season began in the fall. In the spring when we would to the beach for a sunset cookout, the fisherman would line the pier fishing for squid. We walked the pier, maneuvering the blood of the squid that would overflow from buckets and run down the pier.

you know who you are

and you know what you want.

Fall is when the Gray Whales passed through as they migrated south. Standing on the shoreline, I could often glimpse the fins of a pod passing by. One year, as a teenager, my dad took us kids out on his fishing boat to find a passing pod of whales.

I do not remember us finding the whales. My memory is that they found us. We were not out on the open water long before we were surrounded by these sea giants. Some were easily twice the size of our boat. At first, I was anxious. They could so easily capsize our boat, either by intent or clumsiness. All it would take was from them to brush up against the side of our boat and it could capsize us. But my anxiety was soon sated when I sensed they knew we were there. While I sensed they meant us no harm, I also distinctly sensed that they wanted me to feel safe.

I suddenly felt quite small, but I didn’t feel insignificant next to them. What I did suddenly sense, was my place in the world. As a human being, my place was not at the center of the world or at the top of the food chain. I wasn’t the dominant species nor any more special than the seagulls ahead, the dolphins nearby, the palm trees on the distance shore, or the great whale that was swimming alongside within a few feet from our boat. I simply was part of this incredibly beautiful, unfathomable dance of life that included sun and ocean, whale and human.

Whales were on both sides of the boat, and in front and behind us. For a time, they included us in their traveling pod. They seemed as curious about us as we were about them. The vast distance created by not having a shared language or common understanding that are a given when relating to others from the same species, were at first apparent and then irrelevant. There was a connection and resonance that had nothing to do with language and seemed to operate outside my rational mind, beliefs or understanding.

In the presence of these whales, I was experiencing something primal, deep, mysterious and true – about the sea, about whales, about life, about myself. Somewhere in this, I was feeling myself in a way I never had, understanding myself in a way I never had. There were no words, just a sense of wholeness and gratitude.

This is what the Aries Full Moon is about:

We are to each see where the Tail of the Whale is surfacing to give us a new awareness or depth of understanding. Let us connect to a deep truth within us that has been waiting to be discovered - or recovered. Have this deep knowing then expand our understanding of who we are so that we recognize our place in this world and what we are to do next. Then courageously, bring this new feeling, new awareness, new trust in ourselves into our lives and relationships.

Let us trust our instincts and what lights us up and not shy away from bringing our full self to our daily lives. Let us welcome the interaction of what the day, the moment and life brings and let it play on us, open us, gift us, and in turn we then offer the fullness of what is alive within us. As we move further into the fall, there will be ample opportunity to pull back, reassess, and question ourselves, but not now. Now, we are supported to connect fully and offer the world our fullness.
